Bourcefranc-le-Chapus (pronounced [buʁ.sə.fʁɑ̃.lə.ʃa.py]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are known as the Bourcefrançais or Chapusais and the Bourcefrançaises or Chapusaises. A recently created commune, born in 1908 from the merger of several hamlets of which the two principal ones are Bourcefranc and Le Chapus, it nonetheless possesses a rich history and a diverse urban and maritime heritage.

A little history

It was only from 23 March 1908 that Bourcefranc became a commune in its own right, having belonged until that date to the commune of Marennes. Its first mayor, Léon Oriou, administered the commune until 1935. It was he who inaugurated the Hôtel de ville built in 1930 in the centre of the commune's main settlement. The entire history of Bourcefranc is closely linked to its large neighbour, Marennes.
