Bourbon-l'Archambault [buʁbɔ̃ laʁʃɑ̃bo] is a French commune, situated in the département de l'Allier in the région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is the historic heart of the former province of Bourbonnais.
A little history
The ancient settlement of Bourbon stood on the territory of the Bituriges, whose capital is Bourges (Avaricum). The town (Aquis Bormonis) is crossed by several Roman roads linking Bourges to Autun, Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand. Traces of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo remain on the site (on the site of the église Saint-Georges). The former capital of the seigneurie de Bourbon (before Moulins), the town takes its name from its lords, nine of whom bore the name Archambault, during a period spanning from the 10th to the 12th century. The 1st lived in 959, the 2nd in 1018, the 3rd in 1064, the 4th in 1075, the 5th in 1096, the 6th in 1099, the 7th in 1177, the 8th in 1200 and the 9th in 1249.
