Bouchemaine (prononcé) is a French commune situated in the département of Maine-et-Loire, in the région of Pays de la Loire. It lies on the south-western outskirts of Angers and forms part of the communauté urbaine Angers Loire Métropole. It is the union of three villages, that of Pruniers, the bourg of Bouchemaine and the village of la Pointe, and stands at the confluence of the river Loire and the river Maine, an area subject to flooding in the winter period, and within the Val de Loire inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List.
A little history
The commune of Bouchemaine was born at the end of the 18th century from the union of Pruniers and Bouchemaine, the commune of Pruniers having been absorbed by Bouchemaine. From that point on, the commune comprised three villages, Pruniers, La Pointe and Bouchemaine. In 1790, Bouchemaine was designated as the chef-lieu de canton. In 1792, the boundaries of the commune of Bouchemaine were established to bring together the parishes of Saint-Symphorien de Bouchemaine, Saint-Aubin de Pruniers and part of that of Epiré.
