Avrillé [avʁije] is a French commune located in the département of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. It lies on the north-western outskirts of the city of Angers, 5.2 km away, and forms part of the urban community Angers Loire Métropole.
A little history
The territory was inhabited well before a Gallo-Roman estate was established there. Acheulean-type bifaces (Palaeolithic) found at the foot of la Perrière, a diorite hammer-axe dating from the Neolithic period discovered among other polished stone objects at the Bois du Roy, and traces of a primitive metallurgical industry (-500) at various locations across the commune all attest to the ancient, temporary or lasting, presence of people in the commune. However, one cannot yet truly speak of the birth of Avrillé, as no trace suggests that any village was to be found there. The history of Avrillé is better documented from the 12th century onwards, when the parish of Auvrillé was created.
