Cholet covers 87.5 km², lies between 63 and 184 m above sea level and had 54,404 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Cholet is a French commune, the chief town of an arrondissement, located in the département of Maine-et-Loire in the Pays de la Loire region. It is the second largest town in Maine-et-Loire after Angers. It is the main commune of the natural and historical region of the Mauges, in the south-west of the former province of Anjou, in the immediate vicinity of Loire-Atlantique (former province of Bretagne), Vendée and Deux-Sèvres (former province of Poitou).
A little history
Numerous discoveries make it possible to prove the existence of a prehistoric presence on the territory of the commune. Found there were, in particular, several polishing stones and thirty-three polished stone axes. From the Neolithic period, only three menhirs remain in Cholet, one located at the lieu-dit la Garde, a second (the Pierre Plate) at the lieu-dit la Pochetière and a third (the Grand menhir de la Garde) moved to the jardin du Mail in Cholet in 1885. Four other menhirs at the lieu-dit Gué-au-Boin and a fifth at La Bréchoire have been destroyed or have disappeared.
