Saumur, the town
Saumur covers 66.3 km², lies between 20 and 95 m above sea level and had 26,241 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Saumur is a French commune, a sub-prefecture of the département of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. It is the third largest commune in the département by number of inhabitants. On 1 February 1973, Saumur joined with four neighbouring communes, Bagneux, Dampierre-sur-Loire, Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent and Saint-Lambert-des-Levées.
A little history
The presence of megalithic monuments such as the dolmen de Bagneux shows evidence of human settlement as far back as the Neolithic period. In 845, Saumur was pillaged by the Viking chief Hasting. Around 960, Thibaut le Tricheur had the château de Saumur built. At the end of the 10th century, Gelduin, lord of Saumur, was a vassal of the counts of Blois, which made him an enemy of the powerful count of Anjou, Foulques III Nerra.
