The site of Trélazé has been occupied since the Gallo-Roman period, as attested by remains found at Cartigné. Trélazé is mentioned as a parish in the 12th century. It is dotted with hamlets built near existing roads or in the vicinity of slate quarrying operations. At that time and until the end of the Ancien Régime, its territory was divided between secular and ecclesiastical lordships.
