A little history
In 869, King Charles le Chauve built a fortified bridge at Les Ponts-de-Cé in order to block the Vikings raiders from sailing up the Loire. Two examples of similar bridges exist, at Pont-de-l'Arche on the Seine and at Trilbardou on the Marne. In the 15th century, King Louis XI (1423–1483) resided frequently at Les Ponts-de-Cé, even though this place was situated in Anjou. Indeed, at that time, the duc François II de Bretagne, in order to preserve his independence, had allied himself with the enemies of the kingdom of France, notably the duc de Bourgogne Charles le Téméraire.
