Bessay-sur-Allier is a French commune situated in the département of l'Allier, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its inhabitants are known as the Bessaytois and the Bessaytoises.
A little history
From the earliest times, Bessay was a stronghold or fortified town, or oppidum, to use the Latin expression. Two Roman roads crossed on the territory of Bessay. One, coming from Yzeure, took the direction of Saint-Gérand-de-Vaux from the vallon des Billards after having crossed the Luzeray/Luzerai on a wooden bridge. The other departed from Chapeau to end at the château de Paray and the port of la Jolivette on the river Allier. It is probable that Jules César travelled these roads during the 7th campaign of the Gauls in the year 52 BC. Indeed, his army and that of Vercingétorix observed one another from each side of the Allier.
