Sur le plan historique et culturel, la commune fait partie du Razès, un pays historiquement très étendu, qui ne se résume aujourd'hui qu'aux collines de la Malepère et au bas Razès au centre et au sud, limité par le pays de Sault. Exposée à un climat méditerranéen, elle est drainée par le Sou, le ruisseau de Maraing.
