Aussillon is a French commune, situated in the Tarn department in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies at the foot of the montagne Noire (a mountain massif forming the southern edge of the Massif central). Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Thoré, the ruisseau d'Aussillon and various other small watercourses.
A little history
A town whose destiny is intimately linked to that of Mazamet and the surrounding communes, it was immersed, until the last quarter of the twentieth century, in the wool and leather industry. Aussillon long benefited from the industrial spin-offs of Mazamet, which remains for ever the world capital of wool pulling. For 150 years, a true hub of ovine hides, it saw many of its natives dispersed from Argentina to New Zealand, passing through the whole of northern Europe. René Carayol was its mayor for around fifteen years and gave his name to the town's stadium.
