A little history
Before the French Revolution, local society was divided between large farmers, who owned farms of over a hundred hectares, and highly dependent agricultural labourers. These two classes came into conflict during the revolutionary decade. The struggle of the agricultural labourers and smallholders was led by Philippe Michaux, born in 1755. He succeeded in getting himself elected mayor by universal suffrage in 1792, before being overthrown by the fermocrates.
