Alzonne (Occitan, Alzona) is a French commune situated in the north-west of the département of Aude in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Lauragais, the former « Pays de Cocagne », linked both to the cultivation of pastel and to the abundance of its produce, and to the « grenier à blé du Languedoc ». Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the Fresquel, the Lampy, the Vernassonne, the ruisseau de Rebenty, the ruisseau du Reboulidou and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Alzonne was from the 9th century a town of some importance, as it was the chief town of the viguerie of the same name, vicaria Ausonensis, and is comprised in pago Carcassensi. During the Carolingian period Alzonne was a vicairie under the authority of Aton Ier. Alzonne was a strategic point during the crusade against the Albigensians. After the surrender of Raymond Roger Trencavel and his imprisonment in his own prisons, Simon de Montfort was elected Viscount of Béziers, Carcassonne and Albi by the crusaders from the North and the papal legate Arnaud Amaury. On that same day of 15 August 1209, he came to occupy Alzonne, which its inhabitants had deserted.
