Abondance covers 58.8 km², lies between 840 and 2,420 m above sea level and had 1,583 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Abondance is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Situated in the French Chablais, it is the chief town of the canton d'Abondance. Its inhabitants are called the Abondanciers or the « baÿs » (in the Savoyard language).
A little history
The history of the commune is closely linked to that of the abbaye d'Abondance. Rural and agricultural traditions are also important, with the fromage d'Abondance. Abondance attracted a certain number of visitors from the beginning of the 20th century, owing to the beauty of its sites and the quality of its climate. The village had at the time several guesthouses, notably the comfortable Hôtel des Alpes, which drew a fashionable clientele. The beginnings of skiing were early, with a ski club for holidaymakers already in existence in 1930.
