Wervicq-Sud and Wervicq (Belgium) (in Dutch Wervik) formed one and the same entity until the 17th century, as the effective separation of the two communes was pronounced under Louis XIV. Their history is therefore intertwined. Humans settled in the valley of the Lys as far back as Prehistory. At that time, there were only small pockets of settlement.
