The existence of the town may date back to before 1159, in the form "Watengni", but it was identified with certainty for the first time in the cartulary of the abbaye de Loos in 1220 under the name "Wattegnies". In subsequent cartularies, it takes various denominations, including Wategnies, Wattegnies, Watignies, Wateignies and Wattines. The name was fixed as Wattignies in 1733. Wattignies has several historical distinctions.
