Wasquehal (traditionally pronounced [wakal], though today [waskal] or even [waskəal] is most commonly heard) is a French commune situated in the département of Nord (59), in the Hauts-de-France region. Wasquehal, together with Marcq-en-Barœul and Villeneuve-d'Ascq, forms the urban area situated between the dense centres of Lille, Roubaix and Tourcoing. This area became urbanised in the 20th century, when the three conurbations joined and merged, notably around the main transport routes linking them through Wasquehal.
A little history
The town of Wasquehal may have been settled by the Celts, notably during the second Iron Age known as the La Tène culture, with the discovery in 1970 of fragments of slag and sherds decorated with impressed patterns or underlined with grooves. The site would have seen occupation during the Gallo-Roman period. In the first centuries of our era, dwellings known as cotins would have been found there. The inhabitants of these cotins would later give rise to Jehan de Cottignies, a burgher of Lille.
