A little history
Excavations have confirmed the presence of remains of rural constructions from the Middle Ages and the pagan era. Several kings (Clodion le Chevelu, Clotaire Ier, Sigebert Ier, Chilpéric) are said to have lived in Vitry-en-Artois, with Sigebert Ier being assassinated there on the orders of Frédégonde, queen of Neustrie, including a king of Spain, during the period of Spanish domination[What is meant by this?]. During the attack by Cambrai on Vitry-en-Artois to drive out the Spanish[When?] (the "guerre de Vitry"), the inhabitants are said to have hidden in the underground passages that ran from the château to the church and to various houses.
