Villiers-le-Bel, the town
Villiers-le-Bel covers 7.3 km², lies between 64 and 147 m above sea level and had 30,053 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Villiers-le-Bel is a French commune situated at the south-eastern tip of Val-d'Oise in the Île-de-France region, fourteen kilometres north of Paris. It is the chief town of the canton of Villiers-le-Bel. A former rural village in the pays de France, it became a suburban area of detached houses from the 1920s onwards with the construction of housing estates, and the commune underwent a profound social transformation following the establishment of a large housing development in the late 1950s.
A little history
The founding of the village is thought to date back to the 1st or 2nd century, as attested by the presence of a Gallo-Roman well from that period in the commune, at no. 2 rue Jules Ferry. Villiers is mentioned in 320 and the village is cited for the first time in a charter of Louis le Pieux in 832. The lords of the place, the Le Bel family, who were in the service of the king of France, are mentioned in various texts from 1092 onwards. The earliest known is Matthieu le Bel, who was a knight and vassal of the abbaye de Saint-Denis.
