Montmorency (pronounced [mɔ̃mɔʁɑ̃ˈsi]) is a French commune, situated in the département of Val-d'Oise, in the Île-de-France region. Established on very uneven terrain, at the tip of a rocky spur forming a strategic location occupied as early as the 9th century, Montmorency became, from the 17th century onwards, a sought-after holiday resort that attracted numerous celebrities. At the same period, the cultivation of a very particular type of cherry developed in Montmorency, small fruits with a sharp flavour known by the name of cerises de Montmorency, which Madame de Sévigné made famous through her letters.
A little history
The location was occupied, at least seasonally, during the Mesolithic period, as attested by the discovery of tools made from cut sandstone found in the forêt de Montmorency, particularly in the vicinity of Piscop. This prehistoric industry was given the name Montmorencien. Situated on a rocky spur forming a strategic location, commanding the route to Rouen (chaussée Jules César) and the plaine de France, the site was occupied from the 9th century by a wooden castle, which was burned down several times during the 9th and 10th centuries.
