Villelongue-de-la-Salanque is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the region of Occitanie. Its inhabitants are called the Villelonguets. The spelling Villelongais is incorrect and refers to the inhabitants of another commune (Villelongue-dels-Monts).
A little history
Villelongue-de-la-Salanque is a former medieval commune, as the name "Villa longa" can be traced back to 934. The name Salanque was added to the name of the commune in the 14th century and especially from the 17th century onwards. The place is mentioned in 981 in a precept of King Lothaire in favour of the abbey of Saint-Génis-des-Fontaines, which held an allod there "at Villelongue on the river Têt". Subsequently, a family of Vilallonga appears to have held the lordship from the 11th century and probably until some point during the 12th century.
