Villegailhenc, the town

Villegailhenc covers 4.8 km², lies between 109 and 203 m above sea level and had 1,718 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Villegailhenc (Occitan, Vilagalhenc) is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Aude in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Carcassès, a pays centred on the town of Carcassonne, between the foothills of the Massif central and the foothills of the Pyrenees. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the ruisseau de Trapel and by one other watercourse.

A little history

This village is said to have originally been a Villa, a country house, founded by the Roman general Galien around the year 70 AD. Indeed, the discovery of amphorae during the construction of the water supply leads us to believe in these distant origins. Fortifications thus appeared around the old church of Notre-Dame, dating from the 11th century. This church notably served as a refuge in 1589 during the siege of the troops of the duc de Joyeuses and the inhabitants of Villegailhenc by the vicomte de Mirepoix.
