Vieux-Condé is a French commune in the suburbs of Valenciennes, situated on the border with Belgium on the canalised course of the Escaut, in the département of Nord, in the Hauts-de-France region. Vieux-Condé and its surroundings have belonged to the comté de Hainaut, to the kingdom of France, to the Spanish Netherlands and to the Southern Netherlands (in Latin Belgica Regia).
A little history
The first mention of Vieux-Condé is found in 1215, when it was still a village and was called « Vetus Condatum », Condatum having the same origin as the name of the neighbouring town of Condé. Frequently ravaged by war, the village was particularly badly affected in 1645, when barely 6 or 7 houses remained standing. In 1741, coal was discovered at Vieux-Condé. In 1773, numerous medals from the first Roman emperors were discovered.
