Vias [vjas] (in Occitan Viàs [βi.'as]) is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Hérault, in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the Libron, Fossé Maïré, the ruisseau de l'Ardaillou and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, two Natura 2000 sites (the « plateau de Roquehaute » and « est et sud de Béziers »), three protected areas (the réserve naturelle nationale de Roque-Haute, « la Grande Cosse » and « le Clot ») and nine natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Despite a few traces of human presence between 4800 and 4600 BC, one cannot speak of genuine occupation of the land until the late Neolithic period, between 2850 and 2600 BC. An anthropomorphic basalt stele, « La statue menhir de Fontbergade », was found in the 1970s.
