Vertou (in Breton, Gwerzhav) is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region. The commune forms part of historic Brittany, in the Pays nantais and the vineyard area. Its inhabitants are called les Vertaviens.
A little history
In Antiquity, the territory is thought to have been inhabited by the Gaulish people known as the Ambilatres, a Gaulish tribe living on the south bank of the Loire, notably in the neighbouring city of Ratiatum (Rezé), and formed part of the federation of Pictonian peoples. It is also possible that the Anagnutes inhabited the region. Around 575, saint Martin founded a community of monks at Vertou in two abbeys. In the face of Viking attacks and raids, the territory, situated on the south bank of the Loire, took part in the defence of Bas-Poitou by organising a collective defence under the authority of the Comté d'Herbauges.
