Vendôme covers 23.9 km², lies between 76 and 141 m above sea level and had 15,758 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Vendôme is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, a sub-prefecture of the département of Loir-et-Cher, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. It is also the third largest town in the département, behind Blois and Romorantin-Lanthenay, and the second urban unit in the département behind Blois. It lies between the natural regions of the Perche to the north and the Petite Beauce to the south, at the foot of the Loir.
A little history
In prehistoric times, the Loir, divided into several branches, encouraged human settlement, soon followed by troglodyte dwellings cut into the hillside on the left bank. Vendôme is mentioned in the 6th century by Grégoire de Tours as a castellum. It appears to have been a fortified secondary settlement serving as a link between Chartres and Tours, Chartres and Angers, and Le Mans and Orléans. Situated in the hollow of the Loir valley, Vendôme was the capital of the comté de Vendôme, the existence of which is attested as early as the 9th century, and which became a duchy in the 16th century, then an élection in the 18th century.
