La Chaussée-Saint-Victor is a French commune situated in the département of Loir-et-Cher in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its inhabitants are called the Chausséens. Located in the centre of the département, the commune forms part of a small agricultural area within la Beauce, a vast expanse of cereal, oilseed (rapeseed) and protein crop (peas, field beans, lupin) cultivation, with sugar beet and potatoes also grown.
A little history
Originally, the village developed on the banks of the Loire. However, owing to the absence of embankments, repeated flooding by the river led the inhabitants to move the village to mid-slope, around the current église Saint-Victor. Unlike Saint-Claude-de-Diray, whose original village disappeared entirely, the municipal cemetery of la Chaussée-Saint-Victor is the last remaining testament to the location of the first inhabited village. The village is mentioned from the 5th century onwards, after the hermit Victeur founded a chapel there and was subsequently appointed bishop of Maine, succeeding his father of the same name.
