Salbris (Transalpine Gaulish, Salera briva) is a French commune situated in the département of Loir-et-Cher in the Centre-Val de Loire region. The chief town of the canton de la Sologne, Salbris is the second most important town in Sologne after Romorantin-Lanthenay. It is also the largest commune in Loir-et-Cher by surface area (106 km²).
A little history
The name Salbris refers to a crossing of the Sauldre (Salera briva, in the Gaulish language), perhaps a ford rather than a bridge. Numerous "tombelles" (mounds serving as tombs or commemorative monuments) in the surrounding area (Coursangeon, les Chapellières) bear witness to human presence from the end of prehistoric times (the Iron Age). The Roman road coming from Meung-sur-Loire crossed the river at the level of the current impasse de la Cure, then followed the rue du Berry and continued towards Bourges. North of the Sauldre, it followed roughly the rue des Pittingues, then the route de Saint-Viâtre.
