Saint-Aignan (formerly known as Saint-Aignan-en-Berry or Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher) is a French commune situated in the département of Loir-et-Cher, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Built into a hillside on the banks of the Cher, the town enjoyed a highly enviable position at the crossroads of three provinces, Orléanais, Berry and Touraine. It retains from its history an urban architecture of small alleyways as well as numerous monuments.
A little history
Situated on the borders of the Blésois, Touraine and Berry, the region fell in the 10th century under the suzerainty of the ancient counts of Blois, the founding line of the feudal house of Blois-Champagne, which also held Sully and Sancerre, as well as Touraine, the Chartrain and the Dunois, Champagne, and even the county of Beauvais. However, around the year one thousand, their dominance was being challenged by the house of Anjou, which was seeking to expand westwards. The sires of Donzy, Geoffroy Ier and his son Hervé Ier, descendants of the Maison de Semur, then assisted Eudes II de Blois in his struggle against Foulque Nerra d'Anjou.
