Veigné (pronounced [vɛɲe]) is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Scattered archaeological remains attest to a human presence on the territory of Veigné since the Palaeolithic, but it is not until the Carolingian period that Veigné is mentioned in written sources. Around 1550, a notable event took place. The parish of Montbazon was created and its territory of just over 600 ha was taken from that of Veigné.
A little history
Knowledge of the occupation of the site of Veigné by humans before the Middle Ages rests on a collection of rather scattered archaeological remains. The Palaeolithic is represented by Mousterian flints and an Acheulean hand axe, recovered principally from the surface of alluvial terraces, as well as by Solutrean and Magdalenian tools. Polished axes and a polishing stone bear witness to a human presence in the Neolithic period. From the same period dated a menhir 4 m tall, destroyed during the construction of the railway line from Joué-lès-Tours to Loches in the 19th century.
