La Riche covers 8.2 km², lies between 43 and 51 m above sea level and had 10,487 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
La Riche is a French commune in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. The town is integrated within the Tours metropolitan area, being situated on the western boundary of Tours. La Riche exceeded 10,000 inhabitants in 2011 and is the eighth largest town in the metropolitan area in 2015.
A little history
The town takes its name from the église Notre-Dame-la-Riche de Tours, a former suburb separated from its core by the construction of modern fortifications in the mid-17th century. The town therefore takes its name from a religious building that is not situated within its territory (the same is true to the east of Tours with Saint-Pierre-des-Corps and to the north with Saint-Symphorien). The ruisseau de Sainte-Anne once ran through the town, and it was channelled during the 15th century in order to connect the Loire and the Cher. It was however filled in during the 19th century when the jardin botanique de Tours was established partly on its course, and it marks the boundary between La Riche and Tours.
