Chinon, the town
Chinon covers 39 km², lies between 27 and 112 m above sea level and had 8,144 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Chinon (prononcé) is a French commune in Touraine, situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. It is, along with Loches, one of the two sub-prefectures of Indre-et-Loire. Its inhabitants are called the Chinonais.
A little history
Dominating the Vienne, the plateau of Chinon ends in a spur, almost touching the river. The heights of the southern face of this steep promontory shelter extremely ancient troglodyte dwellings. Very early on, its western end was fortified, probably by the Gauls, and without any doubt by the Romans. Local archaeology indicates the presence at Chinon of a sizeable Gallo-Roman settlement protected by permanent defences.
