Saint-Avertin is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Integrated within the métropole de Tours, it is the fifth most populous commune within it, with nearly 15,000 inhabitants in 2022. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Cher, the Filet, the Petit Cher and another small watercourse.
A little history
During the Gallo-Roman period, a hamlet developed in the northern part of the present-day commune, around the stone quarries of l'Ecorcheveau. Its output served the development of Caesarodunum (present-day Tours) and later the cathédrale Saint-Gatien. In the 9th century, the territory of the present-day commune of Saint-Avertin belonged to the collégiale Saint-Martin. Thus, in a document dated 7 January 941, the prince Hugues le Grand restored Saint-Avertin (designated in Latin as Venciacum) to the abbaye Saint Martin de Tours after having usurped it for his own benefit (an act cited by E. Mabille, La Pancarte noire de Saint Matin de Tours, 1866).
