Amboise is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire in the arrondissement of Loches in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Situated on the banks of the Loire, the town owes its renown to the château d'Amboise which dominates it, to the tour de l'Horloge, to the église Saint-Denis, to the château du Clos Lucé where Léonard de Vinci lived and died, to the domaine-royal de Château-Gaillard built by Charles VIII in 1496 (whose gardens were laid out by Pacello da Mercogliano), to the Maison des Pages de Camille Aubaude and to the pagode de Chanteloup. Its name is also associated with the bloody "conjuration d'Amboise" of March 1560.
A little history
The éperon des Châtelliers, upon which the château d'Amboise is built, contains an important Chassean Neolithic site of the Val de Loire. It was discovered during excavations carried out by A. and S. Högström between 1954 and 1957. Of particular note, a remarkable feminine idol was uncovered there. The site of the Châtelliers has been continuously occupied during Protohistory and Antiquity, according to more than forty archaeological operations.
