Varilhes (pronounced [vaʁijə] Varilles, from the Occitan Varilhas) is a French commune situated in the département of Ariège in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the pays de Foix, made up of the central portion of the Plantaurel, the massif de l'Arize and a stretch of the vallée de l'Ariège with its few tributaries. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Ariège, the ruisseau de Dalou, the Fage, the ruisseau d'Artix, the ruisseau de la Galage and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The medieval château, documented as early as 1034 and razed on 27 January 1613, has left no trace. The château and its outbuildings occupied a sort of triangle delimited in 2017 by the rue du Quai, the Ariège, the place du Pont and the rue du Bailh. It was surrounded by walls on the side facing the Ariège and protected towards the town by a moat that was probably dry. The first timber building was burnt down during the croisade des albigeois in 1211.
