A little history
Under the Ancien Régime, Varennes depended on the archidiaconé du Gâtinais and the archevêché de Sens. Between 29 January 1939 and 8 February 1939, more than 2,800 Spanish refugees fleeing the collapse of the Second Spanish Republic before the troops of Francisco Franco arrived in the Loiret. Faced with the inadequacy of the reception facilities available in Orléans, 46 rural reception centres were opened, including one in Varennes-en-Gâtinais.
