A little history
In 1170, the village established on both banks of the Escaut was called Pont-de-Trith (from trajectus, a river crossing). An old bridge carried a road descending from Famars and rising directly towards the hamlet of Saint-Léger, which bore the name of the martyr who suffered there. This important crossing was defended by a fortress occupied by powerful lords. Among them was Rénier de Trit, who took part in the Crusades of Constantinople.
