Trégastel [tχegastɛl] is a French commune situated in the département des Côtes-d'Armor, in the région of Bretagne. A seaside resort on the côte de granit rose, Trégastel has approximately 2,400 inhabitants. The population increases fivefold during the summer season.
A little history
The territory of the commune contains several archaeological remains, two allées couvertes (Kergüntuil and île Renote), a dolmen (Kergüntuil), two menhirs (Sainte Anne and Trémarc'h) and a Gaulish stele (relocated to the Office de tourisme). From the 4th or 5th century onwards, Christianised Bretons led by religious leaders, driven out of Great Britain by Irish raids or the Anglo-Saxons, landed in great numbers on the Armorican coasts and established new settlements bearing witness to their religious organisation (plou-, lan(n)-, tre(f)-). This is how Trégastel (meaning "a settled place with a castle") came into being. Trégastel acquired the status of a parish in the 12th or 13th century.
