Trèbes (in Occitan Trebes) is a French commune, situated in the département of Aude in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is part of the Carcassès, a pays centred on the town of Carcassonne, between the foothills of the Massif central and the foothills of the Pyrenees. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the Aude, the Orbiel, the ruisseau de Bazalac and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The village that is at the origin of Trèbes was established on the hill of the Plô, not far from the confluence of the Aude and the Orbiel, which served as a natural barrier. In the Roman period, it became an important vicus whose territory still bears traces of the land registry of the colony of Carcassonne. In 793, a significant battle took place on the Orbiel between the comte Guillaume de Gellone and an army sent by the Emir of Córdoba Hicham Ier. After the battle, the Saracens are said to have made their way towards Trèbes.
