Toulouges covers 8 km², lies between 50 and 82 m above sea level and had 7,450 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Toulouges is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is in the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Basse and Agouille d'en Biagnes.
A little history
The plain of Toulouges was the setting for a series of councils, known as "councils of peace", as they took place within the movement of the Paix de Dieu. These councils are also referred to as "councils of Elne / Toulouges" or simply "councils of Elne", as they fell under the jurisdiction of the bishopric of Elne. The first of these councils was convened by the archbishop of Narbonne Guifred de Cerdagne in 1027 and it is the first to introduce the concept of the Trêve de Dieu, which complements that of the Paix de Dieu. Councils were subsequently held in the plain of Toulouges in December 1041 and in 1065.
