Tonnay-Boutonne is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Boutonnais and the Boutonnaises. This small town is a former stronghold linked to the legend of Ganelon, traitor at Roncevaux, besieged and taken by Saint Louis in the 13th century.
A little history
According to Arcis de Caumont, there is a «motte féodale» (artificial mound) whose keep was destroyed. The motte encased it. There must therefore remain inside a cellar. A local tradition claims that Ganelon, traitor at Roncevaux, took refuge in this fortress which he owned at Tonnay-Boutonne, and that Charlemagne came to besiege it and, after having taken him or had him hanged, had his body thrown into the well of the keep.
