Thuir covers 19.9 km², lies between 78 and 243 m above sea level and had 8,243 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Thuir is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in the region of the Aspres, a Roussillon territory between the furrows of the Têt to the north and the Tech to the south, which takes its name from the stony nature of its soils. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Basse, the Adou, the ruisseau de Sainte-Eugénie and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Thuir is mentioned as early as the 10th century in documents of the period. It is a former royal villa, surrounded by an enclosure that housed the church and the cemetery. This enclosure was an irregular heptagon, built from rounded pebbles. A moat completed the defensive arrangements of the villa.
