Tence is a French commune in the département of Haute-Loire in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is historically situated in the south-east of Velay. Tence is part of the communauté de communes du Haut-Lignon, together with the communes of Chenereilles, Le Mas-de-Tence, Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, Le Mazet-Saint-Voy, and Saint-Jeures.
A little history
During the late Middle Ages, Tence was a market town surrounded by fortifications in order to resist attacks from pillagers and brigands. Later, these also served a purpose during the Wars of Religion. Only a few walls forming towers and moats remain as a reminder of these wars. Two periods had a strong impact on the town of Tence, the Wars of Religion and the Revolution of 1789.
