Yssingeaux [isɛ̃ʒo] is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Loire, of which it is a sub-prefecture, and in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the natural region of Velay. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Lignon du Velay, the Auze, the Ramel, the Siaulme, the Crisselle and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Yssingeaux has Gallo-Roman origins, mentioned in the 10th century in the cartulary of Chamalières. A fortified town with ramparts and towers, it was incorporated into Auvergne, the county of Toulouse and then the crown. Jean de Bourbon built a fortified house serving as a staging point between the episcopal seat and the bishops' summer residence at Monistrol-sur-Loire. This building is the current town hall. On 4 August 1621 the town was attacked by the Huguenots.
