Brioude covers 13.5 km², lies between 414 and 622 m above sea level and had 6,527 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Brioude is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Loire (of which it is a sub-prefecture), in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its inhabitants are called the Brivadois. With 6,527 inhabitants in 2023, Brioude is the fourth most populous town in the département, behind Le Puy-en-Velay, Monistrol-sur-Loire and Yssingeaux.
A little history
Near the aerodrome of Brioude-Beaumont, a surface site has yielded pre-Acheulean industry estimated to be between 80,000 and 5,000 years old. The name of the town as well as several ceramic facies unearthed to the south of the village would confirm the La Tène origins of the Brivadois settlement. However, outside of archaeology, which attests to a certain Gallo-Roman presence on the site throughout the Early Empire, the historical references to the town are of a later date. Everything known of Brioude from the earliest periods is to be connected to the emergence of the cult of Saint Julien.
