A little history
Several archaeological discoveries attest to the occupation of this area during the Gallo-Roman period. One of them brought to light the existence, at the lieu-dit La Borie, of a farming operation that produced pitch, used among other things to caulk boats. In a recent article, the archaeologist and doctor of history Pierre-Eric Poble proposes a Gallo-Roman origin for the site of Monistrol. According to his research, it is possible that a sanctuary dedicated to Mars Vorocius may have been the forerunner of the small monastery established in this location during the early Middle Ages.
