Craponne-sur-Arzon is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Loire in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. A rural commune, it had 1,998 inhabitants in 2023, spread between its old town centre, its suburban and housing-estate districts, as well as its numerous hamlets established across a total area of 33 km2. The commune is a central market town, exerting an influence over a catchment area encompassing nearly 15,000 inhabitants, straddling Haute-Loire, Loire and Puy-de-Dôme.
A little history
Few or no prehistoric elements have been identified on the site of the present-day town centre of Craponne. Elsewhere, the sites of Véac, Vernetchabre, Frimas, Antreuil, Cuberolles and Bougernes are noted, where Neolithic remains such as stones with cavities or basins have been detected. A menhir was most likely discovered at la Croix Blanche, between the town and the hamlet of Frimas, to the south-west. Within the commune, the local history society has recorded two notable sites, firstly that of Paulagnac, or Polagnac, where pottery, bronze Roman coins and also mosaic tesserae were found, almost certainly attesting to the ancient presence of a Gallo-Roman villa.
