According to certain local scholars, the authors of the cartularies of the early Middle Ages did not know where to place Aurec. At times it was Vellave, at times Lyonnais, at times Forézien. Les Amis du Vieil Aurec, a local heritage conservation association that has existed since 1966, and the archaeologist and historian Pierre-Eric Poble do not agree on the origins of Aurec. The association remains faithful to the version of the founding of Aurec given by historians of the 17th and 19th centuries.
