Bas-en-Basset (pronunciation) is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Loire in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
A little history
Despite the discovery of flint dating from the Neolithic period near the Loire, there is no evidence of permanent occupation of the territory in prehistoric times. The commune of Bas-en-Basset is situated in the north of the former territory of the Vellaves, close to the territory of the Ségusiaves. At that time, a sort of proto-urban hub comprising three sites close to one another was to be found there, running from west to east as follows. First, the Mont Malorum, a fortified site on a promontory overlooking the plain. Then, at Basset, an open settlement on the right bank (eastern side) of the Loire, occupied principally during the 2nd century BC. And finally, at Bas, another open settlement on the left bank of the Loire.
