Tautavel (in Catalan, Talteüll) is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the région of Occitanie. Within the framework of the local Catalan geography, the village is found in the comarca or natural region of Roussillon. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is in the massif des Corbières, a limestone chaos forming the transition between the Massif central and the Pyrénées.
A little history
Situated near the current village of Tautavel, the Caune de l'Arago is an internationally renowned site for the archaeological excavations that have been carried out there since 1963. This perched cave overlooking the valley contains an important prehistoric deposit. After seven years of methodical excavations, in July 1971, the team of Professor Henry de Lumley discovered fragments of a human skull there (a face and a frontal bone) dating back approximately 450,000 years. Aged twenty, the homme de Tautavel stood 1.60 m tall.
